State Russian Museum houses the largest collection of Russian
art in the world, including icon masterpieces of the 12th -18th
centuries, splendid portraits by the Russian painters of the 18th
century, canvases by famous Russian realist masters, such as Aivazovsky,
Repin and Surikov. Works of art by Filonov, Kandinsky, Shagal and Malevich
acquaint visitors with well-known Russian avante-gardists. A large collection
of sculpture occupies a prominent place in the museum. Interesting and
original items are displayed in the department of old Russian applied
art.
