Oranienbaum (Lomonosov) is a tsars' residence
located 40 km westwards of St.Petersburg, which was renamed in honor of
the Russian genius scientist Lomonosov in the Soviet time. The fantastical
palaces and pavilions of the complex take visitors to the 18th
century.
The Chinese Palace occupies a very picturesque position in the park. The
pseudo-Chinese exotic character of the pavilion makes it look like a toy.
Only here can visitors see the unique bugles room. Especially valuable
are the plafond paintings made by the members of the Venetian Academy
of Art and authentic parquet floors.
Fortification works called Petershtadt was built in the middle of the
18th century for Peter III. The exhibition contains a collection
of West European art, rare furniture from the Baltic countries and 218
lacquered paintings.
Elegant building of another pleasure pavilion Katalnaya Gorka is of great
artistic value. There is a wealth of sculpture, carving and painting.
The porcelain room, which is decorated with porcelain groups manufactured
in 1775, is a real masterpiece.
