Gatchina is the unique residence
built in the style of a British hunting castle with all the attributes:
underground passages, secret doors, tricky passages and staircases. Surrounding
the castle is a park with surprise pavilions, numerous sculptures, water
mazes, ponds and islets.
Richly decorated luxurious interiors of the castle contrast its simple
and austere exterior and impress visitors with harmony and exquisite taste.
The exhibition of the museum contains bas-reliefs and sculptures, beautiful
furniture and drapes, collections of paintings, antiquarian objects and
arms of the XVII-XIX centuries.
Here visitors will get to know more about Paul I, the most enigmatic
tsar in Russian history, and Alexander III, who lived in the castle with
his family.
Special Offer:
- Priory (Priorat), a strange building with a conical tower resembling
a knights' castle, was built for the prior of the Order of the Knights
of Malta upon the order of Paul I. This is the only castle in Russia which
was made of earth. The castle is depicted on many pictures and works of
applied art and is now a romantic symbol of Gatchina.
